Becoming A Part of the Global Action

Turkish movie industry has come a long way in the last few decades. The low budget high frequency shooting of the 60’s and 70’s is now replaced by higher budget and better quality feature films as well as high end niche films which are shot at considerably lower budgets. In other words, higher quality is now the main target of moviemakers regardless of the budget. In many cases, low budget Turkish films that are not box office oriented get to win international prizes.

The diverse nature of the cultural life in Turkey with people of very different backgrounds and life styles give the moviemakers abundant choices for scenarios and settings. Natural beauties of the country as well as the glamorous Istanbul which alone is an unequaled asset, avail a very attractive platform for the moviemakers. Bridging Asia and Europe, Turkey has been a source of various different civilizations in its history. Romans, Greeks and Turks have left their own cultural marks in almost every aspect. Traces of these diverse civilizations have contributed to the cultural mix substantially. Therefore, Turkey is very different from any other Muslim country in the middle east. Its secular democracy enables people of different beliefs and cultures live together peacefully.

The liberalised economy has sprung since radical steps had been taken in 1980. Currently, new technologies enter the country almost at the same time as its western allies. Succession to the EU has also played a major role in the build of trust by the foreign investors and added up in the record breaking GNP growth in the last few years. Economy has now become far less fragile and the international move towards globalisation is being fealt in many respects. Import taxes for EU products have been voided and despite the fears for losing the competition against EU products, Turkey has paradoxically become an industrial producer-exporter. Several industrial groups have formed corporate marriages with their international counterparts and especially the young and educated population is excited about the concept of becoming a part of the “global action”.

Our company, Energy Media has also some new projects with international links. We are currently in contact with producers from Norway and Japan for two different joint production projects.
